Mexico, Otra Vez

After what feels like an eternity, the world is gradually reopening its doors, and travel is becoming a reality once again. As someone who has longed to wander the vibrant streets of Mexico again, I can hardly contain my excitement. It has been nearly four years since my last visit, but the time has finally come to revisit the land of rich culture, warm people, and breathtaking sights. In this blog post, I want to share my anticipation for my upcoming trip, highlighting my eagerness to return to Mexico after the pandemic, explore Oaxaca despite my complicated relationship with the city, immerse myself in the charm of Merida, and uncover the ancient and modern wonders of Mexico City, particularly the historic site of Tenochtitlan.

Mexico: A Long-Awaited Reunion:
When I imagine boarding the plane that will take me back to the enchanting land of Mexico, a wave of nostalgia washing over me, I recall the vibrant colors, mouthwatering cuisine, and the genuine hospitality of its people. The memories of my previous visits in 2019 have been etched into my heart, and the anticipation of creating new memories overwhelms me with joy.

Oaxaca: A Complex Love Story:
My relationship with Oaxaca has always been a bittersweet one. The city’s captivating blend of indigenous traditions, colonial architecture, and culinary delights has both enchanted and challenged me. Despite the complexities I’ve experienced in the past, I am eager to return and give Oaxaca another chance. I believe that the city’s rich cultural heritage, including its world-renowned Guelaguetza and vibrant art scene, will help me develop a deeper appreciation for the city and its unique character. I plan to arrive at the tail-end of La Guelaguetza, which seems appropriate, given that this part of the journey will be a celebration of how far I have come since my last visit — the Oaxacan whirlwind that set me on my current path.

I am also excited to be taking classes at the Spanish Immersion School in Oaxaca again, to make sure that my Spanish (especially my imperatives!) is nice and crispy for next school year!

Merida: A Fresh Exploration:
Venturing into new territories is always thrilling, and my first visit to Merida promises to be an adventure like no other. Known for its colonial charm and rich Mayan heritage, Merida beckons me with its vibrant plazas, awe-inspiring architecture, and mouthwatering Yucatecan cuisine. I yearn to immerse myself in the city’s lively markets, wander through its cobblestone streets, explore its intriguing museums, and visit the oldest church in Mexico, Catedral de San Ildefonso, also known as the Mérida Cathedral, all while absorbing the warmth and hospitality of its inhabitants — and its beaches!

Mexico City: Ancient Marvels and Modern Delights:
No visit to Mexico would be complete without paying homage to its magnificent capital, Mexico City. The sprawling metropolis offers a tapestry of old and new, where ancient civilizations coexist with modern urban life. One of the highlights of my trip will be my visit to the historic site of Tenochtitlan, the ancient capital of the Aztec empire. As I stand among the ruins, I will be transported back in time, envisioning the grandeur of this once-thriving civilization. I am also looking forward to visiting the Palacio de Bellas Artes.

In addition to its ancient wonders, Mexico City boasts a vibrant art scene, world-class museums, and a thriving culinary culture. I am excited to revisit some of my favorite museums in Coyoacán that I explored once before: the Leon Trotsky House Museum, and La Casa Azul, Museo Frida Kahlo. I also can’t wait to indulge in delectable street food like tacos al pastor and elote!

As I count down the days until my journey commences, my heart brims with anticipation and eagerness. Mexico, with its diverse landscapes, rich history, and warm-hearted people, holds a special place in my heart. While my relationship with Oaxaca may be complicated, I am excited to embrace its complexities. I look forward to exploring the colonial splendor of Merida and uncovering the ancient mysteries of Mexico City, with the awe-inspiring site of Tenochtitlan and a long-overdue pilgrimage to the home of Mother Frida as the centerpieces. This journey is not just about revisiting a beloved country; it is an opportunity to reconnect with my love for travel, explore new horizons, and create memories that will last a lifetime. Mexico, here I come!
